Make an original herbarium with your child

Your dear little one no longer takes off from the television? Offer him to go in search of the most beautiful plants and not the remote control buried under the sofa! It doesn't seem like anything, but making a herbarium is an outdoor activity that raises awareness of plant life. He may not know it yet, but your child will love this special treasure hunt. Some specimens bloom in autumn or winter, so the collection can start at any time!   Fishing for flowers! A herbarium is a set of dried plants pressed between sheets of paper. If the method is widely used in botany, many people collect plants for pleasure. The harvest of flowers can be the occasion of a pleasant family outing. If the mission may seem difficult in the city, nothing prevents you from surveying the municipal parks and gardens … But the must is still to go to the forest ! A great way to stimulate the sense of observation and the desire to learn from your little one. Making your herbarium is both very easy and inexpensive. You just need a pair of scissors, gloves to avoid small bumps, a bag to put your harvest and… self-adhesive labels! Stick them on each specimen so as not to forget their environment, their number, etc. The most meticulous are equipped with a directory or a dictionary to prevent the flowers from retracting. But the method is somewhat cumbersome, so it is better to slip them into these heavy works when you get home! As for the climatic conditions, be aware that flowers are rarely collected in rainy weather… It is even better that they are not damp, this accelerates the mold process. On the other hand, choose those that are not damaged or have a disease.   Eternal Youth The challenge is to keep the flower as it is. To do this, it must be emptied of its water and the best way is to compress it. To do this, place newspaper (very absorbent) between each flower so as to form a pile. Then place a very heavy object on top of your pile. Several books or a box of heavy objects will do. Change the moisture-laden newsprint every 2-3 days. Repeat until completely dried. When changing paper, be careful not to damage the flowers or change the place labels. Some use blotting paper instead of newsprint. The technique is good but more expensive…   Layout Once your harvest dries, all you have to do is arrange it. Prefer white page books, they are much more compact than workbooks. It is also possible to make your own herbarium. Two small wooden or cardboard boards held closed by tape or string are enough to compress the leaves. Authentic look guaranteed! You have the choice between taping the flower at the stem or sticking it directly on the leaf. If you opt for the latter method, use a wood glue or a white glue in a pot, avoiding too much. Small tip, press the flower with the help of a sheet of paper, this will prevent you from damaging it. You can also make the choice not to fix the flowers. You will be able to observe them more easily from every angle. Finally, ask your child to add legends : name of the flower, date and place of harvest, comments on color and smell, etc. The whole point is to make the herbarium a personal and colorful object. And not a cold and gloomy object as we usually imagine…
