Salt dough, a hobby within everyone's reach

Salt paste is a material widely used to shape all kinds of decorative objects and figurines. Salt dough has the advantage of being very easy to make, and being very economical. On the other hand, as it does not contain any toxic elements, it is a creative hobby very well suited to children. It allows children to develop their creativity by modeling figures from their imagination. For the little ones, it even allows to develop fine motor skills and coordination of the eye with the hand.

Recipe for salt dough

To prepare the salt dough, simply mix 1 glass of fine salt with 2 glasses of flour, then add 1 glass of warm water and knead with your fingers. That's it, the salt dough is ready… The consistency of the dough should be flexible. If it is soft and sticky, just add a little flour. On the other hand, if the consistency is more floury, it is necessary to add a little water. This paste can be stored in a tea towel, placed in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. Then all you have to do is model. And there, you can use everything that comes your way. Knife, toothpick, rolling pin, cookie cutter… It's up to you to create and imagine!

Cooking the salt dough

Before cooking the objects in salt dough, let them dry a little (about 12 hours). Otherwise, there is a risk of deformation of the subject during cooking. Then, the cooking is done in the oven, starting very low (50 °) and gradually increasing to reach 100/110 ° after half an hour. The most complex thing will be to manage the cooking time. Because, in fact, everything depends on the size of the parts… Fine objects, with a thickness of 1-2 cm, are cooked in 2 hours. Beyond that, it is necessary to monitor regularly to see if the object is hard. The well-cooked salt dough sounds a bit "hollow". Very small objects can do without cooking, provided they are thoroughly dried, for a good week.

The dough can be colored at the time of its manufacture, by adding a food coloring, chili powder, saffron or any other natural pigment (paints). After cooking, the colors will take on an aged appearance, close to pastel. It is also possible to glue all kinds of decorative elements on the subject before drying. For example, you can put pearls, glitter, sand… or any other element supporting the passage in the oven. An egg whitewash can also give a pretty golden color. Then, once the object is cooked, you can paint it. If you do an activity with a child, prefer a gouache or watercolor, easier to spread and easily washable. Finally, the last step is to apply a varnish to the object. It will further beautify and protect your salt dough creations!
